Stompin' at the Palace
How do you turn 30 pounds of sand, seven mop heads and two gallons of paint into music? Stomp! The primordial band of rhythmic renegades is at it again, this time on the Cleveland Palace Theater stage. This is urban guerrilla theater at its best.
For those who happened to catch the Cleveland International Film Festival pre-feature short starring the London cast of Stomp, or seen their award-winning commercial for Coca-Cola, this electrifying performance troup needs no introduction. Stomp is a percussion group that uses everything but tradi-
tional percussion instruments to "make rhythm out of anything we can get our hands on" according to co-founder and director Luke Cresswell.
The concept of found music is not a new one. Who doesn't remember being taught as a child to find music in combs and kitchen pots, or a rubber band stretched taut and plucked? Stomp takes this childlike impulse and weaves it into one of the most sophisticated and riveting theatrical performances ever. From stiff bristled brooms and Zippo lighters to trash can lids and newspaper, Stomp takes the idea of found music to the height of percussive symphony.
Stomp's Cleveland engagement runs through May 5 at Playhouse Square Center's Palace Theater. Showtimes are Tuesday
Stomp
through Friday at 7:30 pm, Saturdays at 5 pm and 9 pm, and Sundays at 3 pm and 7 pm. Tickets are available at the box office, or by phone at 216-241-6000.

Yes, we have no bananas
With its release of Carmen Miranda: Bananas is My Business, Fox Lorber Home Video celebrates a woman who has been called the "embodiment of camp." Famous for her broken English, her wildly garish and racy costumes, and of course, the trademark banana-bedecked turban, what many may not realize is that in 1945 she was the highestpaid female performer in the United States. She became Hollywood's image of Latina.
Bananas, which is slated for release in May, richly weaves archival footage, film fragments, interviews, and dramatic reenactments in its portrayal of the Brazilian Bombshell. A juicy addition to any fruit bowl.
